This month's meeting was attended by only 10 members of the WCAC committee ... there were several apologies due to other commitments associated with the graduation ceremonies of the Regular Force and Officer Cadets as well as the official opening of the Senior NCO's Mess. The meeting was chaired by Ivan Carswell. The following items were considered. • Plcycentre. Mr George MacLachlan, playcentre secretary, reported that eight first class applications had been received for the two positions advertised. Four had been received for the position of supervisor and another four for that of assistant. Appointments have now been made. Mrs Ceri Foote is the new supervisor and Gail McLean her assistant. Mr MacLachlan said that •the other unsuccessful Ipplicants had agreed to provide a backup when necessary. The childcare centre will be closed from 1 6 December to 9 January. • Skating rink. A petition was received coikaining the signatures of 238 children
from the Waiouru Primary School requesting that a skating rink be built. Long-serving committee member George MacLachlan said that it was the first petition he can recall during his 12 years on the committee and it indicated the degree of interest. The chairman pointed out that whilst a proposed skating rink area had been included in a preliminary landscaping sketch plan no capital funding had yet been allowed so the project was dependent on community support and demand. The proposed site is opposite the Community Centre and near the Health Centre. The problem of getting support and action from a constantly changing population for any community project was again mentioned but it was agreed that interest must somehow be generated in the Waiouru community. Sonny Melbourne agreed to receive a letter asking him to form a committee for both the skating rink and the playground.
• Siegfried Bauer. It was agreed that the WCAC committee should send a letter to Siegfried Bauer congratulating him on his win in the 1000-mile Colac race. It was recorded that 'Ziggy' worked in Waiouru 's water treatment plant for two years and used to run between his home in Raetihi to work in Waiouru and back again.
