Former Ohakune girl heads overseas

Former Ohakune girl, Jane Gilberd, was back in town briefly to say goodbye to family and friends before setting out on her first ever overseas trip. She left Auckland last week for a 5-month sea voyage on the M / V 'Anastasis' to Suva and then through the Pacific to the Hawaiin Islands. The 'Anastasis' will make 7 ports of call in the islands before going on to Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Jane is one of 120 people attending a course of Christian discipleship training on board the M/V 'Anastasis' (greek word meaning 'Resurrection'). Among the crew of 200 on board the 'Anastasis' is another former resident of Ohakune. He is Robbie Bryant who is 2nd cook and has been a crew member on previous voyages. Jane, who was born in Ohakune 25 years ago, attended the local primary school before going on to Ruapehu College. Her first job was with Peach, Cornwall & Partners in Raetihi for one year. She then moved back to work at the Ohakune branch of the Bank of New Zealand where she stayed for 14 months before being transferred to the Auckland University Branch of the BNZ. She has been with that branch in Auckland for 4'/2 years but is at present on a year's leave of absence. When she disembarks in 5 month's time Jane wants to continue travelling and workjng for the remaining 7 months through England and Europe before returning to New Zealand in a year's time. Before leaving she agreed to send news of her travels to the Bulletin so that her many friends in the Waimarino can follow her progress.
