No newsprint at Mill
The Winstone Samsung mill at Karioi is not toliave a newsprint capability after all. This was decided last week following a $1.1 million feasibility study into the proposal earlier this year to set up a newsprint facility at the pulp mill. This decision was announced in a half-yearly report issued by the company after it had considered various options. Instead, it will work on continuing to develop the mill's potential to supply and market high grade pulps and assess the prospect of expanding to 1 20.000 tonnes a year. This compares with The mill's original capacity of 60,000 tonnes and an enhanced capacity of 90,000 which will be available from 1 April 1984. The introduction of a chemical ingredient to the thermomechanic'al pulp late
last year enabled the new and higher quality CTMP product to find a wider range of outlets in various markets. For the last 4-5 months the company has been installing a bleach-treatment plant and when this comes into operation early in the New Year, market prospects are expected to be further improved with the new BCTMP product. In its 1983 report the company had reported a loss of more than SUmillion in the operations conducted by Winstone Samsung Industries. However in this latest report the company had some encouraging news saying that the half year had been one of solid progress. Saies at 29,883 tonnes and production at 26,210 tonnes were respectively 1 17% and 79% ahead of last year and the hourly productivity h^fe improved by 32%.
