Band wants new members
Seen cutting the- Waimarino Brass Band's 75th Anniversary cake are the oldest and youngest members of the band. Cvril Baker, 87, was 12 years of age when the band was formed in 1 908. His falher was the band's first conductor and he was a member himselffor many \ears before he left thearea to live in Hawkes Ba\ . Cyril played the cornet. Shaun Brebner, 13 of Ohakune and a student at Ruapehu College, has been a member of the Waimarino Brass Band since the beginning of thi's year. He plays a tenor horn.
The Waimarino Brass Band is keen to hear from anyone in the Waimarino who would like to join the band and learn to play an instrument. Of the 14 present members, five are juniors who are learning to play instruments of their choice. The band has only one girl member at present but would like more. Training will be given on any of the wide selection ofinstruments available ... the band has 6 comets, 4 horns, 3 baritones, -3 bass's, 2 trombones, 2 drums and 1 euphonium. It is an opportunity for anyone wanting to learn to play an instrument to do so without having to pay out a large sum of money for their own equipment — - a bass alone costs about $6000 while good trumpets cost between $700-$80Q.
