Pupils enjoy camping experience

Pupils of Raetihi Primary School's Rooms 7 and 8 attended a week-long camp in the Ruahines recently. They stayed at the Kawhatau Valley Forest Service Base Camp with members of staff — Miss Lyn Dallison and Paul Ferors — and parent helpers under canvas. It was an outdoor education trip to study bushcraft, flora and fauna and to tearn camp cooking. Following is a report on the camping trip from 11-year-old Cindy Langdon of Room 7. On- Monday the 31st of October Rooms 7 and 8 went on a camp to Kawhatau Valley Base Camp. We left school at 9.30 Monday morning and arrived there at 12 o'clock. We all got out of the cars and lookedaround the camp site. On the camp we had daily activities, these are all of them: string trail, search and rescue, bush identification, log study, pace and ■compass, bridge building. The first activity for- my group was Search and Rescue. We made a stretcher

out of two long sticks, ropes and jackets. At night we all played night games, it was fun. For tea on Monday we had sausages, and jelly and fruit for pudding. On Tuesday for breakfast we had Ricies, Wheaties or Coca Popy. Our activity for Tuesday was String Trail and Pace and Compass. For tea we had stew, peas and potatoes, for pudding we had Instant Pudding and pineapple. On Wednesday our activity was Bridge Buildings It was a lot of fun. On Thursday the last day of camp our group activity was log study and bush identification. During the days we were there we went on a cage flying fox. We left Miss Dallison in the middle. We also went on a hike up to Colenso High Point ( 5,500 ft /1700m). The games we played were cricket, softball and spotlight. When we got there there was hardly any mud. When we left Friday morning there. were three big mud puddles.
