Tongariro Tramping Club re-union
In February/ March next year, Mr Gordon Hunt, one of the founding members of the Tongariro Tramping Club, is to visit New Zealand. To coincide with his return to Raetihi/ Ohakune the club has decided to hold it's 50th Anniversary on Saturday 3 March 1984. A few years early, (the official formation was in 1936) but interested groups were already tramping in the early thirties and therefore 1 933 seems to be a good year for the club's conception. The club has had an
interesting history. At times there were up to 60 members and some of the early members became well known personalities within the co.mmunity ... Bill Mead, Tom Shout and Neville Mosen were among these. The Waimarino Camera Club developed as ari offshoot of tramping and climbing activities, many members belong to both organisations. The Tramping Club was also an interesting organisation in that it was one of the few where. Raetihi/Ohakune differences were buried ... but only as long as
monthly meetings were held in alternate towns!. Many of the founding members are still active outdoor exponents. Olive Bunce and Bruce Davis are two of these and Bruce is helping to write up a short history of the club and its hut. Mangaiti Hut still stands and is frequently used by those continuing the tramping tradition of the Tongariro Tramping Club. Past members who wish to attend the celebrations/ reunion are urged to write to Brian Mosen, 6 Rawhiti Road, Pukerua Bay; \
