Freak accident

On Thursday afternoon 10 November a freak accident involving two trucks and a trailer occurred on SH4 just baelow the Makatote Viaduct. A Mercedes truck towing a Fiat truck on a trailer had stopped on the rest area at the side of the road so that the driver and his mate could change a tyre. The engine was switched off. While changing the tyre the truck/ trailer unit started to move forward and one of the men climbed back into the cab to try to steer it away from the steep bank below the rest area. But with the engine turned off the power steering was inoperative and the entire unit gained momentum to crash 90m down the bank into the Makatote Gorge below. The •n who had climbed into cab managed to jump clear in time. Heavy vehicle recovery equipment from Wellington was sent up and managed to haul the damaged units back on'to the road again.
