Vaccination only safe guard for dogs

A distemper epidemic that is affecting dogs in other parts of the country could be spreading into the Waimarino. One confirmed case has been reported by the vet in Taihape and the Raetihi vet, David Seifert, says he has heard of dogs at Pipiriki having to be destroyed because of distemper but he hasn't seen any cases yet himself. A dog's only protection from distemper is by vaccination to prevent the

disease said David Seifert. Dogs that have had vaccinations 12 months or more ago need booster shots. Being a viral infection, once it takes hold there is no cure. Of those that contract distemper, about half will die, most of those that survive will have permanent brain damage. Main symptoms are that the dog will appear "offcolour" and have a discharge from the eyes and nose.
