Poster competition finalists
Ohakune Primary School A competition was run at the Ohakune Primary School for the best poster to commemorate the 75 th anniversary of the opening of the Main Trunk Line in 1908. About 150 children from Standard 3 to Form 2 entered the competition and submitted a wide range of colourful and imaginative designs. These were judged by staff at the school to narrow the entries down to a final selection of 1 2 which were to be judged again by Railways Head Office staff when they arrived from Wellington. First and second prizes were a return trip to either Auckland or Wellington on the Silver Fern or on a Road Services bus. The other 10 finalists will also receive small awards which are yet to be determined. Ruapehu College A competition for pupils at the College was also held during the same week leading up to the Mairi Trunk jubilee weekend and a large number of entries were received. Art teacher Mrs Merilyn George made the preliminary selection to find 15 finalists. These were then judged by David Foley, publicity and advertising manager for New Zealand Railways in
Wellington and, until recently, their chief designer. First prize was awarded to Arthur Reihana (15) and second prize to his younger brother Brian Reihana (14). Arthur will be offered a free return trip to either Auckland or Wellington on
the Silver Fern while brother Brian will be offered a similar return trip by NZR Road Services bus. There were also two other students whose poster designs were highly commended. They were Delwyn Berry and Thomas Waaka.
