Tramper drowns on Ruapehu

A 34-year old woman was drowned in the upper reaches of the Wahianoa River above Mt Ruapehu's Rangipo Desert on Sunday 23 October, whilst she and twacompanions were crossing the swollen river. She was Miss Robyn Jane Foster whose body was recovered by a police search and rescue team some three miles below the point where she had entered the river. Her two male companions who had also slipped into the river while attempting to cross it were unable to help her as she was swept away in the fast-flowing waters. The three were part of a group of nine trampers from the Auckland Baptist Tramping Club who were traversingfrom the Rangipo Hut on south-east slopes of Mount Ruapehu to the Maungaehuehu Hut above the Rangataua State ForesL over Labour Weekend.
