Closure of Railway Row to public traffic not imminent
Following ajoint meeting between New Zealand Railways and the Ohakune Borough Council on 30 August to discuss access through Railway property at the Junction, a letter has been received by council from Mr R.G. Davies, District Engineer for NZR in Wanganui. The letter assured council that the Railways CorporaJjcn did not intend closing ^Bilway Row to public traffic ... "at least until work has been completed on the bridges in the yicinity." The letter goes on to point out that "the road was initially constructed for
Railway purposes only. It has no footpath and the sections open directly onto the road. It is therefore totally unsuited and unsafe as a through road and, in the longer term, will be closed to the general public as soon as it is, practical to do so." In the meantime the Corporation has asked for Council's assistance in signposting and policing the area should the speed and behaviour of additional traffic be such as to cause concern to the residents of Railway Row.
