Raetihi Borough News
Raetihi Borough and Waimarino County combined to share their administration staff and conduct their operations out of the same building as from last month. This agreement has been finalised after nearly 12 months of negotiation since former town clerk Mr Tony Chase resigned to take up an appointment in Gisborne. In the meantime county clerk, Mrs Hope Vaughan, has been acting as town clerk for the borough. Mrs Vaughan is now confirmed as both county clerk (for the Waimarino) and town clerk (for Raetihi Borough). The present Raetihi Borough Council Chambers will be redesignated the administration centre for both county and borough councils while the Waimarino County offices, across the road, will be used for the administration of hydatids, noxious weeds and catchment board business. The combined operation should result in substantial savings in administration costs for both local authorities with an obvious benefit to ratepayers. It should also strengthen local government in the area. Raetihi Mayor, Mr Garrick Workman said he was delighted at the appointment of Mrs Vaughan to the Borough Council as it's permanent town clerk ... "it's what we've been working towards for some time." * * * The first full ordinary monthly meeting of the Raetihi Borough Council in its new 3-year term was held in the Raetihi Council Chambers on Wednesday evening 26 October. It was attended by the mayor and all councillors. The place of Town Clerk, Mrs Hope Vaughan who is at present on leave, was ably filled by Mrs Shirley Brig, a member of the council staff.
★ ★ ★ Council expressed its appreciation that the Postmaster General had agreed to have the Raetihi prefix 'RET' included in the new telephone directory which is to be published next year. ★ ★ ★ Council also expressed it's appreciation of the work done by Trevor Francis in pruning all the trees within the borough boundary over the winter months. Council also proposes to write a letter of thanks to the local Rotary Club for the donation of two trees which have already been planted. ★ ★ ★ Cr Punch, chairman of the Town Planning Committee, announced that the Town Planner, Mr I.. Petherick, had had a preliminary meeting with the committee to discuss a resume of Town Plan. This review of the Town Plan, whilst not finalised, is to be available to all ratepayers in order to get some feedback and public comment. There will be some changes said Cr Punch but sufficient preliminary work had been done on it to present it to the public in its present form. ★ ★ ★ The council endorses the nomination of Ohakune's
Mayor Bill Taylor as the joint Boroughs' representative to the Wanganui United Council and also endorsed the appointment of Raetihi's Mayor Garrick Workman as it's liaison officer with Mayor Taylor. ★ ★ ★ Following a discussia^^ with Mayor Taylor of Ohakune and Mayor Byford ofTaihape, Raetihi's Mayor, Garrick Workman, was nominated by Council as the joint representative for the Raetihi, Ohakune and Taihape boroughs on the No. 8 District Roads Board Council. He will liaise with the other two councils for a deputv representative. ★ ★ ★ Now that the borough staff have mowed the grass verges around town Council urges all ratepayers and owners to maintain the road reserve verges at the front of their properties. This would mean a saving to the ratepav^^ since, if the work has to be done by borough staff throughout the summer months, the cost to council will be considerable.
