College student helps crew sailing ship

The voyage was for ten days from 0900 hrs on Monday 13 September to 0900 hrs on Friday 23 September. The ship sailed for a local anchorage, in our case it was at Smoke House Bay, where the last trainee arrived and embarked at 1800 hrs, Monday night. 14 September — lectures and sail training. 1 5-20 September — sailed to and around Great Barrier Island. 21 September — sailed from Great Barrier to Kawau Island and toured around the Marision House. At 1200 hrs sailed to Auckland to pick up Right Honourable Sir Edward Heath (former Prime Minister ofthe United Kingdom). 1700 hrs elected captain, lst mate, 2 navigators and 4 watch officers from trainee crew . 22 September — sailed

around Auckland harbour with elected crew. 23 September — arrived at Marsden Wharf at 0800 hrs. General clean up. 0930 disembarked and departed for home. The Spirit of Adventure was built for the youth of New Zealand by the late Mr John Fisher. Designed by Mr J.B. Brooke and constructed by Voss and Brijs Shipyard, Auckland. Launched on 8 December 1973, by Miss Susan Fisher, daughter of Mr John Fisher. No two voyages are ever the same as so much depends on wind direction, wind speed and the trainee crew itself. The trainee crew were lent: one safagk belt/harness; a seama^H jersey; a waterproof parka and trousers and a sea bag as our own luggage was stored on shore.
