Proper disposal of dead stock avoids spread of diseases

• /ith ^ maximum penalty $500 for leaving dead stock lying about, farmers should ensure that they have an efficient dead stock and offal disposal system. In addition dead stock and offal can allow the spread of diseases such as hydatids, blackleg, malignant oedema, salmonella and tetanus. Carcases and offal can be got rid of by either burning . or burial. Burning is difficult to achieve satisfactorily and the stench can be rather unpleasant. The most practical solution is to use an offal pit.

A contractor is currently advertising in the Bulletin. He can drill offal holes 2'6" wide and 22' deep for $65. Drilling the hole isn't the end of the matter though. An uncovered pit is a lethal trap for both humans and animals. All offal holes must be covered, preferably with a ' heavy concrete pad or plug that can only be moved with a tractor. An Aglink has just been published by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries on the subject of carcases and offal disposal. Copies are avaiiable from any M.A.F. office.
