Sir Jospeh Ward, Prime Minister of New Zealand in 1908, travelled to Pokaka on 6 November. There at 9.03 a.m he ceremonially drove the last spike into the railway track and thus completed the link in the Main Trunk Line to connect Auckland and Wellington.
