Strong sale at Raetihi
Bidding was brisk at the season's first cattle fair in Raetihi last Thursday. €Six hundred cattle were }rded. This was a signifint improvement over last year when only 400 cattle were pu-t up for the same sale. Local buyers were joined by others from Wanganui, Feilding, Taihape, Turangi and Waikato to create a strong buying bench and complete clearance by the end of the day. A pen of 32 Hereford bullocks from Ray Wilson, Ohakune, topped the sale at $535. The rest of the bullocks ranged down to $452.
A pen of 30, 2-year steers from Peter Hammond, Ohakune fetched $462 with the rest of the 2-year steers ranging down to $390. Peter Hammond also topped the 2-year heifers at $352 for 29 with the rest ranging down to $305. Yearling steer entries were topped by Stuart Lilburn, Parapara at $367 for a pen of 30. Prices in this group ranged down to $226 for tail-enders. Brian Chambers, Raetihi got $262 for 6 yeairling heifers with the rest ranging down to $200. The next Raetihi cattle fair is scheduled for 17 November.
