Hihitahi Bluffs realignment top priority
The realignment of the Hihitahi Bluffs — known locally as Mulvay's Corner — section of State Highway One is to receive top priority ... but work is not expected to commence until September or October next year.if the National Roads Board approves the allocation of funds. The authority responsible for this section of road, the No. 8 (Wanganui) District Roads Board, decided recently to place this realignment at the top of its list for funding in the 198485 financial year. Considered to be one of the most dangerous sections of road on SH1 — with 18 injury accidents and 5
fatalities between 1976 and 1982 — these corners have been the subject of considerable concern to all local authorities and emergency services in the-area for some time. Last month a major submission was made to the No. 8 District Roads Board quoting statistics provided by Ministry of Transport, the Automobile Association, hospitals, doctors, police, fire services, Army Training Group, Waiouru Community Advisory Committee, Taihape Borough Council and Rangitikei County Council. The work will be done in stages ... the first stage is expected to cost about
$485,000. The total cost is expected to be in the region of $1 .9 million. Approval has been given by the Nature Conservation Council for a slight encroachment to be made into a small reserve beside the highway — this had been an obstacle until recently.
