Polynesian dance group performs
Sounds from Polynesia echoed around Raetihi Primary School recently when the Mareikura Family Polynesian group visited the school. Dances from the Pacific were performed for the pupils by members of the group, They are hoping to raise funds to help them host a visit from Wellington^ Ngakere Cultural Club on 28 October. "We have a strong association with the Ngakere Cultural Club and visited them earlier in the year," said Charles Mariekura. Social games of rugby and netball will be arranged for the 30-40 visitors of the Maungaronga Marae. The group also performed at Ohakune School. They held a hula-a-thon for five hours to raise money for the visit which gave the dancers ample opportunity to practise all aspects of Polynesian dancing.
The dances performed by the group originate from all over the Pacific, said Charles Mareikura. Pam Graham
