Diabetes Awareness Week

This week is Diabetes Awareness Week. There are two kinds of diabetes. One type affects the 'insulin-dependent' diabetic (which includes all children and ^fe|ung people of normal weight) the other affects the 'non-msulin-dependent' diabetic. Many of the latter are overweight with a diet of fatty foods. In these cases a change of diet may be sufficient to control

their blood-sugar levels but others may have to take tablets. A hereditaryfactorcould also play a part in the non-insulin type of diabetic, said Mrs Mavis Bowie, Wanganui Hospital Board's diabetic educator whose area of responsibility extends to the Waimarino. Symptoms of diabetes include thirst, lassitude, loss of weight, change of eyesight and the jfrequent passing of urine.
