Council decides ski hire issue
The Ohakune Borough Council again considered the question of ski hire and the recent Town Planning Tribunal Hearings at its monthly meeting last month. The question' they were considering were the objections to their earlier decision. not to allow ski hire in the 'downtown' commercial area of Ohakune. In rejecting these objec•ons the Council stated that iving considered all the objectives and submissions in support of the proposed change the Council is. of the opinion that the objections should be disallowed and that the change should proceed. In Teaching this decision, the Council reaffirmed Proposal 4.3.5 of the Scheme Statement (Page 26) and in particular noted that the Tourist Development Zone would be threatened if the move to fneet skier needs in other zones was allowed to continue.
Council stated that it is firmly of the opinion that the nature of ski hire businesses results in traffic congestion caused by inconsiderate and illegal parking. It was noted that the shopping habits of members of the local community had already been detrimentally affected by changes whieh have occurred and, while it was acknowledged that there have been and will continue to be definite benefits to the community as a result of tourist related activites, the Council is also aware of the necessity to limit negative effects as much as possible. The Council is also of the opinion that this decision will not t»e to the detriment of the Commercial A and B zones, because of the nature of the shops in the respective zones which serve to attract customers irrespective of location, but rather that it will enhance the zones by remoying incompatible uses.
