Problems facing Recreation Park proposal
Among problems to be resolved before a recreational park can be established on the Jubilee reserve in Ohakune are several associated with the Reserves Act 1977, according to a letter from Ohakune's Town Flanner Mr E.C. Fox who is advising council on the steps to take. As reported in last week's edition, an Auckland company had wriften to the Ohakune Borough Council seeking approval to develop "a recreational complex of
some consequence" on part ( of Jubilee Fark in Ohakune. v Mr Fox says that "Under i section 53 of the Act, the Council could provide the tennis courts and any buildings associated with them, but the erection of squash courts may be more difficult". The Council could, with the Minister's consent, grant the exclusive use of the area to Mr Brown but not for a period of more than six consecutive days at any time. "It could not lease the area to Mr Brown according to my reading of the Act," said Mr Fox. The Reserves Act and the leasing powers therein should be discussed with the Lands and Survey Department. So far as the Reserves Act is concerned, there is no doubt that the Council can lease the baths but subject to the Minister's consent, he said. But as far as the Ohakune Bowling Club (whose land is situated on part of the' recreational reserve area) is concerned, Mr Fox advises a direct approach to the
:iub to see lf it would be villing to surrender some of ts land.
