Courthouse acquires ramp
This 30-tonne Ohakune courthouse building was not only lowered onto its new and firmer foundations last week but it also acquired a ramp leading up to the main entrance, in the process. The building was raised some 3'/2 metres from its original totara pile foundations 6 weeks ago so that these could be replaced with tanalised pine and concrete foundations. The 70-80 year old totara piles had rotted below ground and were causing ' jTroblems with the structure the building and preventing the proposed
renovation work. This work is expected to take some time and the courthouse building is not expected to accommodate a court hearing until the end of the year. In the meantime these hearings will continue to be heard in the Ohakune Borough Council chambers. The contract for this renovation work was let to Horne Brothers of Ohakune who subcontracted the raising and lowering of the building to Town and Country Building Removals of Paraparaumu.
