Night crash injures six Raetihi people

"It could have been fatal" ... that was the opinion of Ohakune's traffic officer Graeme Cble. In the early hours of last Monday morning a car with six occupants failed to negotiate a bend on the Mangarewa Road, north of Raetihi, and hit a tree. All of the occupants - three adults and three children, ended up in hospital. The children were taken to the Waimarino Hospital with cuts and abrasions. The three adults were taken to Wanganui Base Hospital with more serious, injuries. They were all from Raetihi. It is understood none of the occupants were wearing seat

belts at the time. Those injured were the driver Mr John Henare, 31, who suffered fractured ribs, his wife Jacqueline, 32, received chest and internal injuries and William Fikari fractured and dislocated a shoulder. The three Henare children were Sheryl, 11, Gene, 10, and Quinn, 7. The accident happened soon after 3 o'clock in the morning when the car was being driven southwest from S.H.49A. The accident was attended by ambulance from the Waimarino Hospital, the Ohakune Fire Brigade, Traffic Officer Graeme Cole and Constable Marty Sutherland.
