Another award for local Karate exponent
Charles Mareikura of the Whanake Rangataua Club and Sensei (teacher) of students at the Maungarongo Fa in Ohakune, has recently been awarded his 5th Dan (fifth degree black belt) by visiting president and founder of the American Shotokan Karate system, Master Frederick J. Hamilton. Charles. who qualified for his lst Dan in Wellington on 15 May 1973, has worked steadily through the grades over the intervening years in different karate systems. His first. in Wellington, employed the Tien Sien Fai Shotokan system. He qualified for his 2nd Dan whilst he was in Japan touring with a representative Folynesian Group who were selected to perform in 1 977. There he was examined by Yoshitsugu Inatori in Shi/.oka Frefecture, employing the Hakushinkai Karate system. Whilst in Japan in 1977 Charles Mareikura also qualified as a lst Dan in Judo. Charles was one of between 500-600 practitioners of the martial arts who attended that Judo grading meeting in 1977.
Some years later, in New Zealand, he was awarded his 3rd and 4th Dans by Master Frederick J. Hamilton who recently presented Charles with>his 5th Dan.
