Naval link to be reinforced

The "freedom of the borough", conferred by Ohakune on the naval signalling station, HMNZS Irirangi, is to be extended for a further indefinite term. This decision was made at last month's meeting of the Ohakune Borough Council following an earlier informal meeting between the mayor of Ohakune, Mr Bill Taylor and the commanding officer of HMNZS Irirangi Lieutenant Commander Alan Feck in Waiouru. A 'freedom' is normally conferred without a time limit but, because of the high turnover of personnel at such a naval base as HMNZS Irirangi, Council considered it would be an appropriate symbolic gesture to reinforce this link with the Navy. Lieutenant Commander Feck, who is himsejf soon to be leaving the area to take up another appointment, is 'delighted' to have the freedom of Ohakune extended to the current crew of HMNZS Irirangi.
