Weekend burglary
Ohakune police were called out at 3.00am on Saturday morning to investigate a broken window at the Junction Ski Shop. When nothing appeared to be missing and no offenders were found, Constables Marty Sutherland and Greg White decided to patrol the town. As they turned into Clyde Street at 3.30am they saw two men carrying sports gear across the road from Sports Country. They gave chase but both men ran into the Mangateitei Stream and, under cover of darkness, eluded the police. A dog handler was called from Wanganui. The dog picked up a scent near Rochfort Fark but lost it at
Jubilee Fark because of the rain. However, police did recover $4000 worth of stolen property from a car which had been parked near Sports Country and $1000 worth of property hidden in a driveway opposite Sports Country. Following further enquiries police arrested and charged one 22-year old Wellington man with burglary. He will be appearing in the Ohakune District Court on Thursday 13 October. A second man,. also from Wellington, is expected to appear in court next week charged with intentional damage (to the Junction Ski Shop).
