Derailment

A railway wagon, loaded with lengths of steel, was derailed on the Main Trunk Line at Waiouru on 9 September when one of its bogie wheels rode up onto the points and it was dragged 100m north of the crossing. The accident occurred soon after midday and the

wagon was damaged but no one was injured. One of the army's heavy recovery vehicles - a mobile crane - from the nearby A.T.G. depot was used to right the wagon and reload the steel onto another N.Z.R. flat-top wagon. The damaged wagon had to have its wheels replaced.
