Ruapehu College conducts Literacy Scheme
Ruapehu College is using volunteers from its senior school and the community to set up the Literacy Scheme again in the third term for both College students and adults. Two rooms in the Senior Studies are to be used with the classroom housing equipment and a nearby resource room being available to increase the area available as needed. lnitially the area of concentration would be basic reading and decoding of difficult words. Anybody who can read would be able to help, if they have the time and patience. It may be possible, if the interest is there, for the scheme to operate in each of the three areas - Ohakune, Raetihi and Waiouru, at the homes of either tutor or
pupil. The Literary Assistance Scheme follows two pilot schemesin 1980 and 1981. It was found then that the individual help given was very beneficial, not only in improved reading ability but also in strengthening personal relationships and self-esteem. The College has 8 volunteers to date and, though the time they have available, varies, more volunteers would be gratefully accepted. Three of the volunteers would like to help adults outside of school hours. A meeting will be held to clarify time and organise transport etc. Flease contact Sheila Haddon at the College for more information if you would like to help.
