Memorial Service for Turner Family

The memorial service which was held on Sunday for Roy Turner and his family at the Chateau Tongariro was attended by about 400 people from all over the North Island and several from the Soiith Island. Following the service which wasconducted by Rev. David Tonkin, about 200 people travelled to N'ational Fark where about 20 native trees were planted in memory of the family - Roy, his wife Anne and their two children, 6-year-old Kim and 4-year-old Guy, who had gone missing on a flight from Tekapo to Fox Glacier on 30 July. During the tree-planting ceremony in Buddo Street

next to the swimming baths and opposite Roy Turner's Ski Hire business, friends and relatives were invited to speak and the National Fark Country Music Club sang two hymns. The ceremony ended with a Maori hymn sung by the National Fark Maori Culture Club before guests returned to the local school forafternoon tea andfurtherrerainiscences about the Turner family. It had been expected that about 12 light aircraft would fly in from all over New Zealand but owing to overcast and drizzling conditions only 2 made it ... one from Whangarei, the other from Napier.
