The following cases were heard by Judge D. Lowe in the Ohakune District Court last Thursday. The hearings were conducted in the Ohakune Council Chambers due to renovationk work at the Ohakune Courthouse. • • • Charges against three Ohakune men of causing intentional damage to a picnic area at Tongariro National Park on 12 June were dismissed by Judge D, Lowe with the comment: "I dismiss this case with the feeling that someone has not had enough courage to face the music and tell the truth". Prosecution evidence had shown that the picnic area had been dkmaged by riders on motorcycles. Those charged were: Graeme John Holland, 18, an Ohakune tradesman's assistant; Gene Lynn McQuarrie, 20, apprentice plumber; Ross James Burrows, 17, greenkeeper. Judge Lowe said that he did not know which motorcycle rider had caused the alleged damage. A •^.ndrew Robert Foubister, 20, millhand of Ohakune: Ronald Thomas HamiltopLow, 17, forest labourer of Ohakune: Christopher John Hancock, 17, ski mechanic of Ohakune and Darrell Shaun McLeod, 20, unemployed of Karioi were charged with intentional damage to a BMW Car and a plate glass window on 18 August. All four were remanded at large without plea to 13 October. • • •

Paul Peter De La Mare, 20, of Ohakune appeared for sentence on three charges of presenting forged cheques at Waiouru between 1 and 8 August. He was remanded again for sentence to 13 October, Judge Lowe saying that: "Iwas going to send you to prison but taking into account that you now have a job, you have a chance to satisfy the probation officer and myself that you can work satisfactorily. Bail was continued at $500 with one surety of a like amount. • • • Phillip Jerry Hiroti, 24, shearer of Raetihi was charged with using obscene language atthe Raetihi Hotel on 30 July. He was convicted and fined $30, with court costs $20. • • • Shane Stephen Hare, 21, of Carterton was charged with using obscene language at Ohakune on 12 August. He was convicted and fined $40 with court costs $20. • • • Richard Cribb, 23, Raetihi council worker was charged with using a gaff for the purpose of taking trout from the Makotutu Stream. He was convicted and fined $30 with court costs $20. • • • Te Rawhi Paty Wharetoroa, 46. soldier of Waiouru, was charged with driving a vehiele under the influence of drink so as to be incapable of- having proper .control of the vehiele at Waiouru on 4 September last year. He was convicted and fined $250, court costs $20, medical

expenses $46.75 and disqualified from driving for six months. • • • Kevin James Watkins, 21, apprentice carpenter of Auckland, was charged with carelessly using a motor vehiele at Ohakune on 23 July. He was convicted and fined $250 with court costs $20 and ordered to re-sit his car driving licence. • • • David John Hunter, 20, a manager from Wanganui but living in Masterton was charged with assaulting an Ohakune publican. He was convicted and fined $20 with court costs $20. • • • Clinton James Bishop, 18, forestry worker of Ohakune, was charged with using a motor vehiele carelessly and driving a vehiele without a warrant of fitness at Ohakune on 1 July. He was convicted and fined $150 with court costs $20 and ordered to take a defensive driving course on the first charge. On the seeond charge he was fined $30 with court costs $20. • • • Gregory Tetomo Arani, 21, forestry worker of Raetihi, was charged with driving a vehiele while disqualified and with drivingan unregistered motorcycle. both at Ohakune on 1 April. He was convicted and fined $200, court costs $20 and disqualified from driving for a further 12 months after his present period of disqualification expired, On the second charge he was convicted and fined $20 with court costs $20.
