Waiouru La Leche League

The final meeting of the current series was attended by eight mothers and three babies. The evening began with an informal discussion on weaning. The underlying theme seemed to be that weaning is best done 'gradually and with love'. Letting the baby set the pace and being aware of his needs are important aspects to consider. Mothers offered suggestions for coping with a reluctant weaner such as giving the baby or toddler an alternative drink, going for a walk, getting dad to help with bedtime and generally providing the love and cuddles in other ways. The second half of the evening turned into a feast, with mothers sampling snacks which were both nutritious and cheap. Having snacks in the fridge, such as a container of sliced apples, celery and carrots, homemade pate or dip will be invaluable to a busy nursing mother who needs something to nibble on, or to produce instantly for toddlers. The next series begins on 21 September and will be held at the home of Mrs Gaye Norgates. The first meeting is on "The Advantages of Breastfeeding" .
