Get out those scrap-books!

Long term residents of the Waimarino will soon have a unique opportunity to venture down memory lane and recall by-gone days when a team of journalism students from Wellington spend a week in Ohakune next month. Twelve students and a tutor from the Wellington Folytechnic School of Journalism will be in the Waimarino from Monday lOOctoberto Friday 14 October, They will be hunting out stories, doing feature articles on people and places, reporting on current activities and interviewing the oldtimers for information about those early days when Rangataua, Raetihi, Karioi and Ohakune were thriving timber towns. when walking tracks provided the only access to the mountain and steam trains plied the Main Trunk I.ine. The Bulletin has been intending to feature more of these historical . items from time to time but. with the ^mited resources. staff and available it has not been possible to get round to see all the, people concerned and to do as much as we would like. Now, with this team of student journalists who are coming to the Waimarino as part of anend-of-vear project. the opportunity has been created for just such a

coverage which we hope to bring you when they have completed their assignments. This is also your opportunity to supply us with, suggestions for the news stories of the past that you would like to hear about ... or you think others might like to hear about. And we would also appreciate hearing from you if you know anyone who could provide us with information, stories and anecdotes of those early bygone days, Just give the Bulletin office a ring (OKN 68 1 ) or drop us a line (FO Box 122 Ohakune) and let us have names and contact numbersand addresses ... we will do the rest. But let us have them soon - we need to co-ordinate the journalist students' programme before they arrive next month.
