Turoa Art Awards

The annual Turoa (Ohakune) Art Awards were presented at the Ohakune Club on Sunday evening 28 August. More than one hundred guests attended the preview at which Ohakune's Mayor, Bill Taylor, formally opened the exhibition of nearly 200 paintings and drawings. This year's judge was Brian Carmody, president of the NZ Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington. In selecting the award winners in the different categories he explained that he was looking for the intention behind the painting — "is it really saying something?" "Local competitions are more interesting than international ones," he said, "because international paintings often reflect a current trend or style which is impersonal, whereas local painting and art is to do

with personal experiences." Both Mr Taylor and Mr Carmody acknowledged the dedication, time and effort put into the Turoa Art Awards each year by Mrs Bea Barnes of Ohakune, who received a round of applause for this, her 5th consecutive year as organiser of this annual event. The following awards were presented: Wanganui Savings Bank Premier A ward ($200): Mrs Lyndon Wilson of Otorohanga for her painting "Rangitoto Gorge". Turoa Skifields Award ($100): Mrs Joan Godfrey of Raetihi for her painting "Autumn Evening, Mt Ruapehu." Turoa Art Award for best oil ($150): Mrs S. Hovell of Te Kuiti — "Landscape, Rangitoto Valley" Runnerup: Mr Maurice Brookes of Ashurst — "Mt Ruapehu

and the Whakapapaiti Stream." Junction Ski Shop Award ($150): Mrs Adrienne Rewi of Ashurst — "Mushroom Gathering". Runner-up: Mr R. Stanley of Marton — "Winter, Central Plateau." Turoa Art Award for portraiture ($100): Mrs Pauline Pritchard of Wanganui — "Time out to read." Runner-up: Susan Kumeroa of Ohakune — "Doris, New Brighton Summer." Turoa Art Award for any other medium ($100): Mr Jim Hubbard of Wanganui — "Natural Confusion." Runner-up: Mrs E. Bennett of Pahiatua — "Cordyline Indivisa."
