Central Region gymnasts versus Aussies

The Australian touring team of 12 gymnasts (2 from each State except Tasmania), 2 coaches and 1 manager arrived in Ohakune on Sunday evening 28 August directly from competing in an International match against New Zealand at Christchurch during the previous day. They were welcomed by the Turoa Tumblers and their coaches who had also been competing in Christchurch. The following day all the Australians, . together with members of the Central Region team, went skiing'on the Turoa skifields. The evening was spent relaxing with billets! Tuesday morning was taken up with preparation for the

afternoon's competition at the Ruapehu College and Community Gymnasium. The NZ Central Region versus Australian Under-15s competition was well attended with the Central Region team winning by a good margin against the Australians. Local Tumbler Warren Scott gained a Silver Medal for coming second overall, beating the best Australian into third place! One of the visiting Australians Mark Shaw was unable to compete owing to a skiing injury sustained the previous day. The after-match social function was also most successful mainly due to the marvellous catering provided by the billetting families. On Wednesday both the

Australians and Central Region teams went skiing again — thoroughly enjoying themselves — especially when it began to snow. The team left Ohakune on Thursday morning after what the manager described as "undoubtedly the highlight of the tour" and with the promise of a return by many of the members to this area within the next few years. Turoa Tumblers wish to express their thanks to Turoa Skifields and to all families who billetted the Australian and Central Region teams and who so generouslly gave up their time to enable the visitors to enjoy such a marvellous experience.
