Dog problem

The appointment of the Raetihi Borough foreman, Mr Kevin Miller, as dog ranger for the borough was endorsed at last week's meeting of the Raetihi Borough Council. Mr Miller reported to council that the dog problem in Raetihi was "getting out of hand" and that two dogs had been destroyed recently — one for killing sheep and the other for killing "six chooks". Some dog owners are just not showing sufficient

responsibility towards their animals, said Mr Miller. The dog owners were neither controlling nor exercising their dogs with the result they roam free and worry stock. Under the new Dog Control and Hydatids Act, dog owners are liable to fines of up to $500 for each offence quite apart from having to accept the possibility that their animals will be shot if they are found killing stock, said Mr Miller.
