Tourist development

Raetihi is seeking to share in the tourist potential which has been generated by the recent development of the ski industry on Mt Ruapehu. The Raetihi Borough Council is currently working with their town planner, Mr Laurie Petherick of Lamont Bycroft and Partners of Wanganui, on drawing up a new town plan. This town plan will be looking for ways in which high density housing can be incorporated within certain areas of the borough to allow for the building of tourist accommodation. Council have asked their town planner to prepare an artist's impression of suitable cottages for these high density tourist areas. They have also asked Mr Bruce Thompson, chairman

of Ohakune's town planning committee, to speak to Council on some of the problems associated with highdensity building subdivisions that may have been encountered in the Ohakune town plan. The Raetihi Borough Council is looking for 'pockets of suitable land' within the borough and is anxious to hear suggestions from ratepayers and residents as to where this tourist development may be sited. "It is important that citizens and ratepayers of Raetihi know that something is being done about the development of tourist facilities and accommodation in the town," said Cr. Garrick Workman.
