New Constable for Ohakune

The Waimarino's new policeman is Constable Brian Wilson who took up his duties at Ohakune earlier this month. He takes the place of Constable John McCartney who transferred to Napier last month. Brian comes to the Waimarino from Pukekohe with his wife Sheryl (a trained nurse) and three ^■toughters Chantelle 7, B^siree 4, and Danielle 2. Brian has been with the N.Z. Police for more than nine years and, until this appointment, was stationed in the Auckland area for the entire period — four years in Otahuhu and five.years.in Pukekohe. He did his training at Ardmore with other 120 police recruits nicknamed locally as 'Robbies Bobbies' after Sir Dove Myer Robinson, at that time, Mayor of Auckland.

Before joining the police force Brian worked for the Reserve Bank in Auckland. Prior to his appointment to Ohakune — "I applied to come here, I wasn't sent as punishment!" — he had only passed through the Waimarino and not stopped. Now that he has settled in and had a chance to meet some of the people he is "really rapt in the place". And in terms of policing it's certainly a different sort of job from the ones he had previously known as a member of the Auckland police region, he said last week. There, it was shift work and once you completed your shift you. could go home-and forget about it. Here it was usually a question of staying on duty until the job in hand had been completed before going home ... and then the

phone rings again! he said. Brian, who was injured in a rugby game some years ago, no longer plays, tugby but was a rugby ret for the Counties Union Lefore coming to the Waimarino. His wife Sheryl has joined the local badminton ilub. Daughter Chantelle attends Ohakune Primary School and Desiree the local Kindergarten. Brian and Sheryl have skied before at Coronet Peak but regard themselves as novices in that sport...at least for the time being.
