Civil Defence appointment
Ohakune Borough Council is now the administering authority for civil defence in the Waimarino and two members of its council have been appointed, one as controller and one as organiser, for the area. These appointments were made at a special meeting in Raetihi of the civil defence committee which decided that all three local authorities — Waimarino County, Raetihi Borough and Ohakune Borough — should take it in turns, on a 3-year rotational basis, to administer civil defence in the area. Mr Bill Taylor, in his capacity as Mayor of the administering authority automatically assumes the position as controller of civil defence in the Waimarino for the next three years. Mr Bully Hay's appointment as civil defence organiser was made following the resignation late last month of the previous area controller, Mr Michael Crowley. For the past 10 years or so, civil defence in the Waimarino has been the responsibility of the Waimarino County Council under its chairman, at present Mr Bruce Berry. At this month's meeting, which was attended by Wanganui regional civil defence controller Mr George Kereama, the 3-year rotational plan to share the responsibility between the three local authorities con-
cerned, was adopted. The new Waimarino civil defence committee now consists of the Mayor of Ohakune (controller), Mayor of Raetihi, Chairman of the Waimarino County Council, one other representative from each local authority plus, in a non-voting capacity, coopted members of the N,Z. Police, Ministry of Transport, Tongariro Natiorial Park and others deemed necessary. The principal officer of the administering authority becomes secretary of this new committee so, as Town Clerk of the Ohakune Borough Council, Colin Turner takes on that responsibility. At this month's meeting of the Ohakune Borough Council, Cr Bully Hays was nominated as the council's other representative on th|g| Waimarino Civil Defenc^ committee. As district organiser for civil defence in the Waimarino area Bully Hays' responsibility is to formulate a C.D. plan that will be operative as soon as possible. He will be assisted in formulating that plan by Mr Kereama who would use Mr Hays' local knowledge of the area to provide information about the sort of action that would be taken should an emergency arise.
