Award for river rescue

A 1982 New Years Day tragedy was recalled briefly when a Royal Humane Society Certificate of Merit was presented to Ohakune resident, ,Mr Bruce Wilde, at this month's Ohakune Borough Council meeting. On that tragic day two people were swept to their deaths in the flooded Manganui- A-Te-Ao river at Ruatiti Domain where

Bruce Wilde and his family had been picnicking. Mr Wilde entered the swift-flowing river to support and save one of the people who had got into difficulties further upstream. Rescuer and rescued spent about 30 minutes in the water before help arrived to lift them both out from a bend in the river.

In aceepting the Royal Humane Society Certificate from Ohakune's Mayor Bruce Wilde acknowledged the help of other people and thanked all those who had participated in the rescue attempt. Tt was a team effort," he said, and he only did what anyone else would have done in similar circumstances.
