Ohakune Borough News
A petition containing more than 300 signatures asking that Ohakune be declared a 'nuclear weapon free zone' was presented to the council at their meeting last Thursday evening. A delegation of about a dozen members of the Waimarino Peace Group attended the meeting to hear their spokesman, Mr Paiil Beckett, present the petition to the full council. The council accepted the petition and, after some discussion, voted unanimously to declare Ohakune 'a nuclear weapon free zone', the Mayor adding that about
40 other local authorities in New Zealand had adopted similar resolutions. * * * The state of the Majestic Building in Thames Street, Ohakune Junction was again raised. Criticism was made of the way it had been boarded up and councillors were invited to go and see this updated 'eye-sore' for themselves. Town Clerk Colin Turner, pointed out that it was only a temporary measure by the owners as a demolition order for the building had already been made. Council * were only
waiting for a court hearing on 8 September for this demolition to be implemented. * * * Sundry debts outstanding as at 3 August 1983 totalled $6,668.48. , Rates outstanding as at 3 August 1983 involved 15 ratepayers and totalled $5,331.51.
