Soldier Bushed

On Friday 5 August, Ed • Cook, a 25-year old soldier from Waiouru went hunting in the Karioi Forest — an area he was not familiar with. On Saturday morning he managed to shoot a hind but he became 'bushed' and was unable to find his way out. Although Mr Cook had sufficient maps and provisions he was unable to establish his sense of direction. Adverse weather conditions prevented him seeing the mountain or any other major landmarks. A Search and Rescue team was formed when he failed to return later in the day. Approximately 40 searchers continued a search in the area throughout the night. On

Sunday Mr Cook managed to find his way to a road and walked out of the bush at about 4pm on Sunday. Novel footwarmer When spoken to later he said that, because of the ex-

tremely low temperatures on Saturday night, he had to place his feet inside the deer to keep them warm. The soldier and his family wish to express their gratitude for the efforts and determination of the Search parties who had volunteered their time to look for him.
