Waioiuru hosts American visitor

Between winter field training phases, the Legal Officer for the United States 'Task Force Rock Steady' exercise held recently in Waiouru, Captain W.C. Meili (Bill) managed to tour some parts of New Zealand. When speaking of the area from Taihape to Taupo, Captain Meili said that the countryside "had to be the most beautiful in the world." In addition to finding something new and exciting at almost each corner, he said he was astounded at the wide variety of outdoor sporting activities in the region. On one occasion, on a brief visit to Lake Taupo, Captain Bill Meili and two companions managed to land two Rainbow Trout. While not large, the fish still provided plenty of sport for the visiting American. Before leaving, the American officer was full of praise for the hospitality of the people in the area. He said that in today's style of living in many overseas countries, all too often people becoine faceless and unfriendly. That was not the case in New Zealand however where people are the most important resource and visitors are treated as 'one of the family.'
