Film Society 10 years old

The Ruapehu Film Society received approval to show films in 1973 from the Minister of Internal Affairs and since then has screened a film every month. This year the Society became affiliated to the Wanganui Film Society and before each film members receive a programme from Wanganui with the screening date and a synopsis of the film. Films for the 1983 season so far have come from France, England, Switzerland, . U.S.A. and Poland. All were recently produced and of a very high quality. The last film, 'Prostitute' was filmed in Birmingham, England in 1980. It featured two young women, one a prostitute and the other a social worker. The next film, 'Burden of Dreams' is an American film made in 1982. The director, Les Blank, has filmed a film-maker, Werner Herzog making a film about an opera-mad dreamer who has an insane scheme for making money in the Peruvian Amazon so that he can open an opera house in the jungle. Half dqcumentary, half romantic madness, it should be a good film. The Ruapehu Film Society provides an opportunity for members to extend their horizons through the media of foreigny films. Anyone over the age of 16 is eligible for membership. For details phone Errol Vincent 374 Ohakune or Linda Keith 4627 Raetihi.
