Raetihi wants to retain separate identity

Several copies of a petition to the New Zealand Post Office requesting that Raetihi telephone subscribers be listed under a. 'Waimarino' prefix rather than an 'Ohakune' prefix when the exchange goes automatic have been distributed in shops and offices in Raetihi for concerned residents and ratepayers to sign. The idea of circulating a petition was proposed at last month's meeting of the Raetihi Borough Council. Whilst some councillors expressed the opinion that it might be a 'non-issue' among ratepayers and may

already be a ' fait accompli', other councillors felt that everything should be done to retain the town's separate identity under an 'umbrella' prefix of Waimarino rather than Ohakune. It was decided to make the petition available to assess public opinion oh this issue before the changeover takes place early next year when it would be too late and Raetihi lost its separate telephone identity to its near neighbour Ohakune. It is believed that copies of the petition, which is due to close shortly, are having signatures added steadily and daily.
