Red clover hazard for ewes

Red clover can be bad news for breeding ewes, according to Invermay Technical Officer, Grant Shackell. Plant oestrogens present in the leaves of all red clover varieties can severely reduce the reproductive potential of grazing ewes. Permanent infertility can occur in animals having continued

access to pastures with high proportions of red or sub , clovers, throughout the year. Temporary infertility occurs when ewes graze red clover just prior to or during mating. There have been reports from Australia, that the oestrogens from red clover make wethers produce milk.
