Heading overseas
A young Raetihi man, Carl Perkins, is about to combine a life-long interest with an ambition to travel and see the world. Carl, who is 24, has been a guitarist.and percussionist (drums, congos, timbalis) since he was a schoolboy at Raetihi Primary School and Ruapehu College. At that time he played locally in a 'family band' known as Blue Image which included his younger brother Shane who played drums when Carl played lead guitar, and his sister Debbie who was vocalist with the band. Carl is now playing with 'Herbs' a 6-piece band based in Auckland which is about to undertake a sevenweek tour of the South Island which will take them as far as Queenstown before heading overseas. Before joining 'Herbs' he played with 'Uprising', a New Plymouth group. His overseas trip begins with a 8Tweek tour of the Islands - Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti before heading for the Asian Arts Festival in. Hong Kong in October. About 15 performers
from New Zealand includirig solo acts and Polynesian dancers will be accompanying Herbs at the Asian Arts Festival. After that it is on to Sydney and then to Europe where they will be touring and performing for several months. There is a possibility that their tour, which is being sponsored by Polynesian Airlines, will also take thq^^ to Jarriaica and the Unit^^ States. Carl, whose first overseas trip this is, expects to be away for between 6 and 7 months. He leaves on 25 August to begin this 'fantastic' experience.
