A District Court with High Court aspirations?
No. Nor was the Ohakune Courthouse lifted 1 Vi m off the ground singlehanded by contractor Peter Thurston as pictured. But it was his contracting firm, Town and Country Building Removals of Paraparaumu, which lifted the 30 tonne courthouse Jmilding recently. ®The lifting operation oecame necessary when it was found the building was slowling 'sinking' into the ground. The entire operation took only 2 days. The first day involved detaching the chimney and strong-room which remained on their original concrete foundations and separating the
joists from the original totara piles. The second day saw the completion of the lifting operation. It was these original totara piles, believed to be nearly seventy years old, which were rotting , underground and causing the building to subside. They will be replaced by tanalised pine piles and then the building will be lowered in about a fortnight's time before the interior is modernised and refurbished. Meanwhile it is quite safe . . in fact the Social Welfare Department conducted a meeting in the Courthouse while it was 'up in the air.'
