Museum's Display Designer attends official opening
A recent and regular visitor to Waiouru for the past six years has been the Wellington-based display and exhibition designer who has been responsible for all jabe display areas of the QE 2 ^Pffmy Memorial Museum at Waiouru. He is Gary Couchman who, on his latest visit, was present at the official opening of the Stage 2 extension on Saturday 23 July. Gary Couchman was commissioned as the Museum's display designer well before the main Stage 1 Museum building was completed in 1978. Though his drawing office is in Wellington where he plans the displays, he has made many trips to Waiouru to work with Army display
staff in setting up the exhibits and arranging audio j visual presentations. Eighty per cent of his work is now involved with display and exhibition design, said Gary Couchman, and he is currently negotiating with several other government departments and official organisations about similar and smaller museums which are planned. These include a ROyal New Zealand Air Force Museum at Wigram and a Police Museum at Trentham. Gary's first major commission was in 1970 when he was one of the design team for the New Zealand stand at the international Expo '70 exhibition in Osaka, Japan.
