Conservation Week
This is Conservation Week (1983). It started on Saturday 30 July and continues through to next Sunday 7 August. The theme of this year's conservation week is 'Forgotten Habitats Matter' and the programme in the Waimarino is being conducted by Park Ranger Bryan Norton in Ohakune. Bryan will be accompanied by local wildlife officer Dave Johnson from x Raetihi. This week-long programme includes visits to eight schools within the Waimarino area and beyond to screen films, show slides and distribute conservation literature, bookmarks and envelope stickers. They also plan to talk to the Taumarunui Tramping Club. The conservation week team will be talking to the various schools (Waiouru Primary, Nowhango
Primary, Ruapehu College, Rangataua Primary, Taihape College, St Josephs/Taihape, Raetihi and Orautoha Primary schools and, in the following week, Ohakune Primary School) about the educational wall charts and teachers guide manuals and about three rare and endangered species of birds, one of which — the blue duck — frequents Tongariro National Park. They will also be distributing various species of native trees and shrubs for planting in and around school campuses.
