Ski skills programme gets underway
The Turoa Alpine and Ski Club (TASCI) in Ohakune is running a programme for young people to improve their skiing techniques for both recreational and racing whatever level they start at. The programme is under the overall direction of the TASCI executive through the Ski Improvement and Race Team Director, Dave Scott, in consultation with the Turoa Skifield Director, John Ball. The programme has operated successfully for three years and ski coach Tom Trumble from Mammoth, California, has returned again this year to rejoin the TASCI programme. He is being assisted by Jerry Weiland from Mt Tremblant, Canada. The programme covers a period of 16 weekends as
well as the school holidays and offers a wide range of options at all levels of skiing ability. The various grades are divided into the following categories TASCI Tamers Basic ski skill training for non-competitive juniors. TASCI Trailers Intermediate to advanced non-competitive recreational skiers of all ages. TASCI Turners Divided into age groups where all basic skills are learnt before progressing to next group. Racing is optional. TASCI Terrors Ski racing techniques for intermediate and advanced skiers. TASCI Turbos Advanced race trainin^^ teams of not more thai^o selected members. The programme emphasises fitness, safety, fun and discipline. When the mountain is closed by bad weather an alternative programme is arranged. As a result of these programmes TASCI hope to have representatives in most of the major racing events on Mount Ruapehu during the current season. These include the Homestyle Cup on Turoa the Hennessy Cup at Whakapapa and the North Island Junior Championships at Tukino.
